Professional Tax Return Filing

Computation of state professional tax from your payroll, with challan, return filing and catch-up for delayed periods on the state portal.

Overview

Professional tax return filing is the periodic report an employer or professional gives to the state authority: how many people were paid, the salaries involved, the tax deducted and the tax paid. Frequency and due dates are set by each state, so a business with employees in more than one state may file several returns on different calendars.

Who needs it

  • Employers holding a professional tax registration certificate (PTRC) who deduct tax from salaries.
  • Self-employed professionals and partners holding an enrolment certificate (PTEC) who file annually in most states.
  • Businesses that registered but never filed, or filed late, and want to regularise.
  • Employers who opened a branch in a new state.

What Zenith does

We listen first, check which states and certificates you hold, how many periods are pending and whether any notice has been received. Then we give a tailored quotation, assign a relationship manager and share a checklist.

  • Computes the monthly tax from your payroll using the state's slabs.
  • Prepares the return and challan and files through the state portal.
  • Tracks due dates by state and reminds you ahead of time.
  • Reconciles deductions with payroll and with what has been paid.
  • Prepares catch-up filings, interest and penalty computations for delayed periods.

Eligibility and key rules

  • The return follows the registration: if you hold a PTRC, you are expected to file whether or not tax was due in a period, subject to state rules.
  • Employers file monthly or annually depending on the state and the amount of tax, according to public guidance.
  • Self-employed persons usually file an annual return and pay the annual tax. A typical public reference date for an annual return is 30 June, but states differ and may extend it.
  • Tax is deducted per the state slab for each employee, within the ₹2,500 a year constitutional cap.
  • Salary figures in the return should match your payroll and your income tax return.
  • Changes in employee numbers or salary slabs should be reflected in the next return.

Documents required

  • Professional tax registration or enrolment certificate and portal login.
  • Salary register showing gross salary by employee for each period.
  • Details of employees who joined or left.
  • Challans of tax already paid.
  • Previous returns and any notices from the state.
  • For self-employed persons: PAN, income statement or proof of earnings, and last year's return.

Process and timeline

  1. Confirm the state, certificate and due dates.
  2. Share payroll for each period.
  3. Zenith applies the slab, computes tax and prepares the return and challan.
  4. You approve; payment is made on the state portal.
  5. The return is filed and the acknowledgement is downloaded.
  6. Records are filed, and the next due date is calendared.

Timelines depend on completeness, complexity and authority processing.

Government fees, penalties and due dates

  • No fee for filing is shown in the public sources read, apart from the tax itself.
  • Due dates vary by state and by monthly or annual status.
  • Late payment and late returns attract interest and penalties under state law, and the rates differ by state.
  • Failure to deduct tax can make the employer liable for the amount.
  • Wilful default or false information can result in prosecution under the state Act.

Amounts and dates above reflect public sources read in October 2026 and change with notifications, so Zenith confirms the current figures in your quotation.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the return in a month when no tax was payable.
  • Applying the slab for the wrong state or for an outdated year.
  • Mismatch between the return and the payroll or the income tax data.
  • Not reporting new joiners or leavers.
  • Missing the annual return after paying monthly.
  • Ignoring a state notice until penalties accumulate.
