Trade Licence

Get or renew the municipal trade licence for your premises and activity, with a checklist of the NOCs and documents your local body asks for.

Overview

A trade licence is permission from the local municipal authority to carry on a particular trade or business at a particular location. It exists so that the municipality can regulate public health, safety and zoning, and it covers only the activity and premises for which it was granted. It does not certify the quality of goods or services and does not give any ownership rights in the property.

Rules, forms, portal and fees are set by the municipal law and the local body, so Zenith first identifies the authority for your address and then prepares the filing.

Who needs it

  • Shops, restaurants, bakeries, salons, laundries and repair businesses.
  • Manufacturing units, workshops and warehouses within municipal limits.
  • Clinics, pharmacies, diagnostic centres and coaching centres.
  • Businesses handling hazardous, flammable or offensive trades, which usually need extra conditions and NOCs.
  • Existing licence holders who need renewal.

What Zenith does

  • Identifies the municipal corporation, council or panchayat and the licence category.
  • Lists the NOCs your business needs and the documents for each.
  • Prepares and files the application, pays fees as authorised and tracks the file.
  • Handles renewal and updates when the activity or premises change.

Professional fees are customised; municipal fees are shown separately in the quotation.

Eligibility and key rules

  • The applicant is generally expected to be an adult and not to have disqualifying records related to business operation.
  • The activity must be permitted in the zone; commercial activity in a residential-only area can be refused.
  • The premises must be owned or leased by the applicant, with required safety, fire and health standards.
  • Common categories: shop and establishment, food establishment, industrial, advertisement and hazardous businesses.
  • A licence is usually valid for a year and must be renewed; some municipalities allow longer periods.
  • A food business also needs its own FSSAI registration or licence; a trade licence does not replace it.

Documents required

  • Application form of the municipality, with passport-size photographs.
  • Identity proof and PAN of the proprietor, partners, directors or the entity.
  • Address and premises proof: ownership documents with the latest property tax receipt, or lease agreement with the owner's NOC.
  • Incorporation or partnership documents for firms and companies, including MOA and AOA where asked.
  • NOCs from the fire department, pollution control board or neighbours, as applicable.
  • Layout plan of the premises, and food licence for food businesses.

Process and timeline

  1. Zenith identifies the authority and the licence category.
  2. The application is filled in on the municipal portal or at the office.
  3. Documents are uploaded and the application number is generated.
  4. The authority verifies, and inspects the premises where needed.
  5. The fee is paid and the licence is issued.

Timelines depend on completeness, complexity and authority processing; sources read describe roughly one to two weeks in large cities and longer in smaller towns.

Government fees, penalties and due dates

  • Fee: set by each municipality; some charge a fixed annual amount, others a share of turnover or a slab by area or category.
  • Renewal: generally annual, filed before expiry; late renewal can attract a surcharge or late fee.
  • Operating without a licence can lead to fines and closure. The sources read mention fines that vary widely by state and violation.
  • Display the licence at the premises and keep it current if the activity changes.
  • Amounts and dates above reflect public sources read in October 2026 and change with notifications, so Zenith confirms the current figures in your quotation.

Common mistakes

  • Starting trade before applying, or applying with the wrong category.
  • Missing the NOCs, so the file stays pending.
  • Letting the licence lapse at the end of the year.
  • Using one licence for a second branch or a different activity.
  • Not updating the authority after a change in premises or ownership.

FAQs

Who issues the licence?

The local municipal corporation, council or panchayat for the area of the business.

Is a trade licence the same as a shops registration?

No. The shops registration is a labour-law registration, while the trade licence is a municipal permission. Some businesses need both.

How long does it last?

Typically a year, with renewal. Some bodies allow longer validity.

Can I apply online?

Many municipalities have online portals; others still use the office.

Do I need it for an online business run from home?

It depends on the local rules. Zenith checks them for your address.

What if my renewal is late?

Expect a late fee or surcharge as per the local body.
