MIS, Budgeting and Forecasting
Monthly management reports, an annual budget and a rolling cash flow forecast built from your books, so you can see where money is going and plan ahead instead of reacting.
Overview
Management Information System (MIS) reports turn your bookkeeping into decisions. Instead of a trial balance, the owner sees monthly revenue, margins, expenses by head, receivables, payables, cash position and how all of this compares with the plan. A budget fixes the plan for the year, and a forecast looks ahead, usually 3 to 12 months, to show whether cash will last and where the pressure points are.
Zenith builds these from your accounting records, so they are only as reliable as the books underneath. If the books are behind, a cleanup is the first step.
Who needs it
- Founders and owners who see profit on paper but struggle with cash.
- Growing small and medium businesses that need a monthly review rather than a year-end surprise.
- Startups preparing for investor updates, bank reviews or a funding round.
- Businesses with seasonal sales or long customer payment cycles.
- Businesses planning expansion, a new product line or a large hiring plan.
What Zenith does
Zenith starts by understanding the business and what decisions the reports must support, then agrees the scope and a tailored quotation. A relationship manager is assigned.
- Designs a reporting pack for your business: profit and loss, balance sheet, cash flow, sales and expense analysis, receivables and payables ageing, and a short commentary.
- Sets key indicators that fit your model, for example gross margin, cost per order, collection days or burn.
- Prepares an annual budget by revenue line and cost head, with monthly phasing and the assumptions written down.
- Compares actuals with budget every month and explains the variances.
- Builds a rolling cash flow forecast and shows scenarios, such as slower collections or a delayed order.
- Identifies cost, pricing and working-capital areas to review, and presents them for your decision.
- Walks through the pack on a call and updates the forecast as facts change.
This service reports and forecasts. It does not give investment advice, and the forecast is an estimate, not a promise of results.
Eligibility and key rules
- Any business can use MIS reporting; there is no registration or threshold.
- Reliable MIS needs timely, reconciled books, ideally closed within a few days of month end.
- Budgets should start from the actual previous year and stated assumptions such as growth, pricing, headcount and credit terms.
- Cash and profit are different: unpaid invoices, stock purchases, loan repayments and tax payments affect cash without hitting profit in the same way.
- Where the pack is to be shared with a lender or investor, figures should tie to the books and, if required, to audited statements.
Documents required
- Monthly books or access to the accounting software; if Zenith keeps your books, nothing extra.
- Last year's financial statements and the current year's trial balance.
- Sales order book, pipeline or contracts that drive revenue.
- Payroll summary and planned hiring.
- Loan schedules, EMIs and other fixed commitments.
- Customer and supplier payment terms and ageing lists.
- Any existing budget, business plan or investor model.
Process and timeline
- Scoping. Decisions to support, reporting frequency, tools and the format are agreed.
- Data review. Books are reviewed for completeness and the mapping to reporting heads is set.
- Template build. The first pack and budget model are prepared and walked through with you.
- Budget and forecast. Assumptions are agreed and the annual budget and rolling forecast are issued.
- Monthly cycle. After each close: actuals, variance, forecast update and a review call.
- Quarterly review. Assumptions, targets and priorities are reviewed.
The first pack depends on the state of the books. Monthly packs follow the close cycle.
Government fees, penalties and due dates
There is no government fee for MIS, budgeting or forecasting. The reports do help you plan for dates that carry penalties:
| Obligation | Typical planning date |
|---|---|
| GST returns | Monthly or quarterly, depending on the scheme. |
| Advance tax | Quarterly instalments, where applicable. |
| Company AGM and AOC-4 | AGM within six months of year end; AOC-4 within 30 days of the AGM. |
| Statutory audit and tax audit | Before the relevant return dates, as applicable. |
Amounts and dates above reflect public sources read in October 2026 and change with notifications, so Zenith confirms the current figures in your quotation.
Common mistakes
- Building a budget once and never comparing it with actuals.
- Forecasting profit but not cash, so that tax, loan and supplier payments surprise you.
- Relying on revenue booked rather than money collected.
- Reports with too many measures; three to six indicators that drive decisions are enough.
- Letting unreconciled books feed the reports.
- Over-hiring or spending ahead of revenue without a plan for how it will be funded.
FAQs
How is MIS different from my accountant's reports?
Statutory and tax reports look backwards for compliance. MIS is built for decisions: trends, margins, comparisons and cash.
Can you work with my existing software?
Yes. Zenith works from exports or read-only access to common accounting tools.
How often will I get reports?
Monthly is common. Weekly cash reports can be agreed where cash is tight.
Do you build a financial model for investors?
A budget and forecast can be extended to a fuller model for fundraising, scoped and quoted separately.
Who decides the assumptions?
You do, with input from Zenith. Assumptions are written down so variances can be explained later.
What if actuals are far from the budget?
That is the point of the review. The variance is explained, the forecast is reset and options are discussed.
Is this the same as a virtual CFO?
No. MIS and budgeting are a defined reporting service. A virtual CFO engagement adds ongoing finance leadership.
