Income Tax & TDS / Income Tax Returns

Revised and Belated Return Filing

Correct a return you already filed, file one you missed, or report omitted income through an updated return, with the right section, deadline and tax and interest worked out first.

Overview

Three situations lead to a fresh return after the original due date, and each has its own section, deadline and cost:

  • Revised return (Section 139(5)): you filed a return but found an error or omission. The revised return completely replaces the original.
  • Belated return (Section 139(4)): you did not file by the due date. You can still file late, with a fee and interest.
  • Updated return, ITR-U (Section 139(8A)): the revised or belated window has closed and you want to report additional income. It can be filed within two years of the end of the relevant assessment year, with additional tax.

This service works out which route fits, prepares the return and files it. For AY 2026-27 (FY 2025-26), the revised and belated deadline in the sources read is 31 December 2026.

Who needs it

  • Salaried people who reported wrong salary, TDS or bank details.
  • Taxpayers who missed interest, rent or freelance income that now shows in AIS.
  • People who forgot to claim a deduction such as 80C, 80D or HRA.
  • Individuals, firms or companies who used the wrong ITR form.
  • Taxpayers who missed the due date altogether.
  • Anyone who received a defective return notice under Section 139(9).

What Zenith does

We listen first: what was filed, when, and what has changed or been discovered. We then confirm scope, share a tailored quotation and a checklist, and assign a relationship manager.

  • Pull the original return, acknowledgement, Form 26AS and AIS and find the differences.
  • Decide whether a revised, belated or updated return applies and explain the cost of each.
  • Recompute tax, interest and late fee, and say what is payable or refundable before you approve.
  • Prepare and file the return, quoting the original acknowledgement number and date where required.
  • Help you e-verify within 30 days and hand over the acknowledgement.

Responding to departmental notices or representing you in assessments is handled only through appropriately authorised professionals, and is quoted separately if needed.

Eligibility and key rules

Other rules:

  • A revised return can be filed more than once within the deadline; each replaces the previous one.
  • The acknowledgement number and date of the original return must be quoted.
  • It cannot be filed once an assessment is completed by the Assessing Officer.
  • Any extra tax must be paid before submitting.
  • A revised return is normally on the same form as the original, unless the original form itself was wrong.
  • A taxpayer who never filed must use the belated route, not a revised return.

Documents required

  • Acknowledgement number and date of the original return, and a copy of the filed return.
  • PAN and portal login details to be used by you or through a signed authority.
  • Form 26AS and AIS for the year.
  • Form 16 or Form 16A, bank statements and interest certificates.
  • Investment proofs for deductions missed.
  • Capital gains statements, foreign asset details or business accounts, depending on what is being corrected.
  • Notice or intimation received (for example under Section 139(9) or 143(1)), if any.

Process and timeline

  1. Scoping, quotation and checklist.
  2. We compare the original return with AIS, 26AS and your records and list corrections.
  3. We confirm the correct route and compute tax, interest and fees.
  4. You approve the revised figures; any extra tax is paid.
  5. The return is filed on the portal selecting the right filing type.
  6. You e-verify within 30 days; refunds are credited to the validated bank account after processing.

Timelines depend on completeness of records and processing by the authority.

Amounts and dates above reflect public sources read in October 2026 and change with notifications, so Zenith confirms the current figures in your quotation.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting until the last week of December, leaving no time to fix a rejected submission.
  • Filing a revised return without the original acknowledgement number.
  • Under-reporting again on the revised return because AIS was not reviewed.
  • Believing a belated return can claim loss carry-forward.
  • Forgetting to pay the extra tax before filing.
  • Using an updated return when a revised return was still available and cheaper.
  • Not e-verifying the revised return.
