GST Annual Return (GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C)

Annual GST return preparation with a full reconciliation of GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-2B and books; GSTR-9, GSTR-9A, GSTR-9C and the final return GSTR-10 where they apply.

Overview

The annual GST return summarises a whole financial year of outward and inward supplies, credit claimed and tax paid, and lets the taxpayer correct what was missed in monthly returns. Regular taxpayers file GSTR-9, composition taxpayers file GSTR-9A, and large taxpayers also file the reconciliation statement GSTR-9C. A different, one-time return, GSTR-10, applies after a registration is cancelled. Zenith prepares the annual return from your filed returns and books, with a full reconciliation before filing.

Who needs it

  • Regular taxpayers: GSTR-9 is mandatory above Rs 2 crore of aggregate turnover and optional up to Rs 2 crore, subject to the yearly notification.
  • Taxpayers above Rs 5 crore: GSTR-9 plus GSTR-9C, reconciling the return with audited financial statements.
  • Composition taxpayers: GSTR-9A.
  • Taxpayers whose registration has been cancelled or surrendered: GSTR-10 (final return) within the time allowed.
  • Not required: input service distributors, casual and non-resident taxable persons, and TDS or TCS deductors.

What Zenith does

Zenith listens first to understand your turnover, the financial years pending and whether returns were filed on time. We give a tailored quotation and assign a relationship manager. The team downloads your filed GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-2B for the year, reconciles them with your books and audited financials, and lists differences in turnover, credit and tax with the reason for each. After you review the working, we prepare GSTR-9 (and GSTR-9C where applicable), calculate any extra tax or interest due, file with your DSC or EVC and share the acknowledgement. For cancelled registrations we also prepare GSTR-10. GSTR-9C reconciliation is a self-certified statement now; where an audit or a certificate is needed, it is done only through appropriately authorised professionals, subject to eligibility and applicable rules.

Eligibility and key rules

  • Annual return is filed once per financial year per GSTIN, covering April to March.
  • It contains six parts and 19 tables: basic details, supplies, credit availed and reversed, tax paid, previous-year transactions reported late, and refunds, demands and the HSN summary.
  • The portal pre-fills figures from GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, but they must be checked against books.
  • GSTR-9 cannot be revised once filed, so reconciliation comes first.
  • GSTR-9C, for turnover above Rs 5 crore, reconciles the return with audited financial statements and is self-certified from FY 2020-21.
  • Aggregate turnover includes taxable, exempt, zero-rated and inter-state supplies of all businesses under the same PAN, excluding tax and reverse charge inward supplies.
  • GSTR-10 is filed within three months of the cancellation date or the order date, whichever is later.

Documents required

  • GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B for every period of the year, and GSTR-2B statements.
  • Sales and purchase registers and trial balance or financial statements.
  • Credit reconciliation: credit availed, reversed and ineligible credit working.
  • HSN-wise summary of outward and inward supplies.
  • E-way bill, e-invoice and export or refund details.
  • Notices, demands and amendments for the year.
  • Audited financial statements and auditor's report (for GSTR-9C filers).
  • For GSTR-10: cancellation order, closing stock statement and credit on stock.

Process and timeline

  1. Collect filed returns and books for the year.
  2. Reconcile turnover, tax and credit across GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-2B and books.
  3. Review differences with you; decide what is reported in which table.
  4. Prepare GSTR-9 on the portal (Services, Returns, Annual Return) and GSTR-9C if applicable.
  5. Compute liabilities, pay any additional tax through the electronic ledgers.
  6. File with DSC or EVC and share the acknowledgement.

Timelines depend on completeness, complexity and authority processing; reconciliation is usually the longest step.

Government fees, penalties and due dates

  • Due date for GSTR-9, GSTR-9A and GSTR-9C: 31 December following the financial year, unless extended by notification (31 December 2026 for FY 2025-26).
  • Late fee for GSTR-9, on top of any interest: Rs 50 per day (turnover up to Rs 5 crore), Rs 100 per day (Rs 5 crore to Rs 20 crore) and Rs 200 per day (above Rs 20 crore), subject to a cap based on turnover in the state; the cap and any waiver depend on the current notification.
  • GSTR-10 late fee: Rs 200 per day (Rs 100 CGST plus Rs 100 SGST) unless a waiver applies.
  • Additional tax found during reconciliation is paid through the electronic cash or credit ledger, with interest where it applies.
  • Amounts and dates above reflect public sources read in October 2026 and change with notifications, so Zenith confirms the current figures in your quotation.

Common mistakes

  • Filing GSTR-9 before comparing it with GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and the books.
  • Mismatch between turnover in the annual return and the audited financials.
  • Claiming credit that does not appear in GSTR-2B for the year.
  • Leaving out the HSN summary tables.
  • Not filing GSTR-9C when turnover is above the limit.
  • Forgetting that GSTR-9 is not revisable.
  • Not filing GSTR-10 after cancellation.
