Udyam (MSME) Registration

Register your enterprise on the Udyam portal to be recognised as a micro, small or medium enterprise and keep the certificate and classification current as you grow.

Overview

Udyam Registration is the Government of India's online registration for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). It is run by the Ministry of MSME through the Udyam portal and replaces the older Udyog Aadhaar and EM-II registrations. On approval the enterprise receives a permanent Udyam Registration Number and a digital certificate carrying a QR code.

The registration is self-declared and paperless: the portal validates the owner's Aadhaar by OTP, validates the PAN, and pulls investment and turnover figures from the income tax and GST systems. Zenith prepares the data, checks that the classification and activity codes are right, files on the portal and hands the certificate over with a short explanation of what to keep updated.

Who needs it

  • Manufacturers, processors and service providers that want to be recognised as MSMEs.
  • Businesses that want priority-sector or collateral-free credit, because banks ask for the Udyam number as proof of MSME status.
  • Suppliers selling to large buyers or government departments, who want the statutory payment-period protection and tender preferences open to MSMEs.
  • Holders of an old Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) or EM-II registration, which must be replaced by an Udyam registration.
  • Startups, LLPs, companies, partnership firms, HUFs, trusts, cooperatives and self-help groups, as well as sole proprietors.

What Zenith does

  • Listens to what the business does, how it is constituted and why it wants the registration.
  • Confirms the entity, the right Aadhaar holder for your constitution, and the activity (manufacturing, services or both).
  • Selects the NIC activity codes with you and reconciles investment and turnover with your ITR and GST data.
  • Files the application on the Udyam portal, handles the OTP steps with you and shares the certificate and number.
  • Explains the yearly updates so the classification stays accurate after you grow.

Professional fees are customised; the registration itself carries no government fee, and anything chargeable is shown separately in the quotation.

Eligibility and key rules

  • One Udyam registration per enterprise. Multiple activities are added as extra NIC codes on the same registration rather than registered twice.
  • The class (micro, small, medium) depends on investment in plant and machinery or equipment and on turnover, and manufacturing and services use the same bands. Sources read describe the bands notified from 1 July 2020; those limits have since been revised, so Zenith confirms the band notified at the time of filing instead of relying on older figures.
  • The Aadhaar that is validated must be the right person: the proprietor for a proprietorship, the managing partner for a partnership, the Karta for an HUF, and the authorised signatory for an LLP, company, trust or cooperative.
  • PAN and GST details are mandatory where the enterprise has them; businesses that are required to hold a GSTIN must provide it.
  • An enterprise formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business cannot register as a new MSME.
  • Enterprises holding UAM or EM-II must re-register on the Udyam portal.

Documents required

  • PAN of the enterprise (company, LLP, firm, HUF) or of the proprietor.
  • Aadhaar number of the person described above, with the mobile number linked to it for OTP.
  • GSTIN and ITR details, if registered.
  • Business address, date of commencement, number of employees and bank account with IFSC.
  • Investment in plant and machinery or equipment, and turnover for the latest year, based on your books or return.
  • Constitution proof (partnership deed, incorporation certificate or similar) is useful to confirm details even though the portal does not require uploads.

Process and timeline

  1. Zenith shares an assignment-specific checklist and confirms the entity and Aadhaar holder.
  2. The owner validates Aadhaar by OTP on the portal; Zenith guides this step.
  3. PAN is validated and the portal fetches ITR and GST data.
  4. Business details, NIC codes, employees, bank details, investment and turnover are entered and reviewed with you.
  5. A final OTP is submitted; the number and certificate are generated.
  6. Zenith shares the certificate and explains the annual updating duty.

Timelines depend on completeness, complexity and authority processing; most delays come from Aadhaar or PAN mismatches.

Government fees, penalties and due dates

  • Government fee: none. Registering on the official portal is free.
  • No renewal: the certificate does not expire, but details such as turnover, investment, address and bank account must be kept current on the portal.
  • The classification can move up or down after an update, and the benefits you hold follow the class shown.
  • Under the MSME Act, a buyer must pay a registered micro or small supplier within the agreed period or, with no agreement, within the statutory period, and delayed payments carry interest; claims can be raised through the MSME Samadhaan portal.
  • Amounts and dates above reflect public sources read in October 2026 and change with notifications, so Zenith confirms the current figures in your quotation.

Common mistakes

  • Name on the application not matching Aadhaar or PAN exactly.
  • Using a personal PAN for a company, LLP or firm.
  • Picking an NIC code that does not describe the real activity.
  • Reporting investment or turnover that differs from the ITR or GST data.
  • Registering a second time for the same enterprise.
  • Never updating after the financial year, leaving the class and figures stale.

FAQs

Is there a government fee for Udyam Registration?

No. The registration on the official portal is free. A professional fee applies only if you engage a provider to prepare and file it.

Does the certificate need renewal?

No. It has no expiry, but the enterprise's data should be refreshed on the portal as figures and details change.

Can a service business register?

Yes. Manufacturing and service enterprises are both covered, and the same classification logic applies.

I have an old Udyog Aadhaar. Do I need to do anything?

Yes. Older UAM and EM-II registrations must be replaced by a fresh Udyam registration.

Do I need GST to register?

Not every enterprise does. If you are already registered under GST, the GSTIN must be provided and the details are linked.

Can I hold more than one Udyam registration?

No. One enterprise gets one registration; additional activities are added as codes.

What does registration give me?

Recognition as an MSME for credit schemes, procurement preferences and payment-delay protection, subject to each scheme's own conditions. It does not by itself approve a loan or a tender.
